After months of rumors of a redesign of the Mac mini with the M1 Pro and M1 Max chipset, recent reports indicate that Apple has canceled its plans for a new Mac mini in 2022.

m1 mac mini
Apple is believed to have been working on a new Mac mini for some time. It updated the entry-level ‌Mac mini‌ with the M1 chip in November 2020, but the high-end offering is still the Intel Space Gray model from 2018. A recent report from 9to5Mac He claimed that Apple originally “had plans” to offer high-end versions of the Mac mini‌ with ‌M1 Pro‌ and ‌M1 Max‌ chips, but that those plans “may have been scrapped” in favor of the all-new Mac Studio.

At a “Peek Performance” event, Apple’s senior vice president of hardware engineering, John Ternus, said Apple’s transition to silicon has “just one more product: ‌Mac Pro‌,” before adding “That’s for another day,” likely indicating that the high-end Mac mini‌ Off the cards for this year.

The new Mac mini ‌ is allegedly still in the works, but it appears that Apple is skipping the M1 Pro and M1 Max to introduce the M2 series chips. Apple is allegedly working on two versions of the ‌Mac mini‌, one with the standard “M2” chip and the second a higher-end model with the “M2 Pro” chip.

BloombergMark Gorman believes that the ‌M2‌ chip will have the same eight-core CPU as the ‌M1‌, but will benefit from speed and efficiency improvements, along with nine or ten new GPU cores, up from seven or eight in the M1‌. Following the M1 Pro‌, it is plausible that the ‌M2‌ Pro features the same 10-core CPU, but has improved efficiency and more GPU cores than the current 14 and 16-core options, just like the M2‌ standard. Testing on the M2 chip is already underway as evidenced by references to the chip in the latest beta build of macOS Monterey.

Leaker Jon Prosser said last year that Apple was working on a complete redesign of the small desktop computer, moving to a smaller chassis with a “plexiglass-like” surface. Contrary to these rumors, famous analyst Ming-Chi Kuo is now claiming that the next generation Apple Mac mini‌ will likely feature the same design as the current model, an aluminum design that Apple has been using in every new Mac mini‌ since 2010.

In keeping with the rumors about the ‌22 Mac mini‌ update being cancelled, Kuo also said that the new Mac mini‌ won’t be released until 2023.
