Samuel Chukwueze scored a late goal in the match as Villarreal stunned Bayern Munich to reach the Champions League semi-finals for the first time in 16 years.

Unai Emery masterminded the 1-0 win in Spain, but dominant Bayern looked in control when Robert Lewandowski broke the score in the 52nd minute at the Allianz Arena.

But, with only his team’s second shot on target in the legs, Chukwueze leveled in the first half in the 88th minute to give Villarreal the lead on aggregate – and hand them a historic victory over the six-times European champions.

They will face the winner of Liverpool against Benfica in the last four, a competition that Jurgen Klopp’s team currently leads 3-1 on aggregate.

Clinical Yellow Submarine kicks off advanced lessons

Emery, the former Arsenal coach, has an authentic pedigree in European football, winning the Europa League twice with Sevilla as well as with Villarreal last season.

His team had already eliminated Juventus in the Champions League this time around, but few of them gave the yellow submarine a chance against Bayern, who are leading by nine points in the Bundesliga and chasing their 10th consecutive title.

Meanwhile, Villarreal are seventh in La Liga but Emery molded them to thrive under the spotlight on big European nights, putting on yet another defensive performance and conquering Bayern in the second half.

Julian Nagelsmann sent in a super attacking squad and what followed was intense pressure from the home side, albeit without creating any clear chances in the first half.

Flying wingers Leroy Sane and Kingsley Coman contributed to Bayern Munich’s 18 pass before the break, but that approach became expected and Jamal Musiala’s header was straight at goalkeeper Jeronimo Rulli.

Villarreal was not happy simply sitting up front, however, as Gerard Moreno proved a threat to the visitors at the end of the half, while first-leg winner Arnott Danjuma hit the net.

Bayern’s first chance after the first half fell to Dayot Opicano, who crossed the crossbar from Sani, before Lewandowski took it upon himself to raise Bayern’s level.

The 33-year-old, booked for a foul on Raul Albiol and perhaps fortunate to avoid a second warning to catch the defender again moments later, cleverly turned around from Thomas Muller’s pass and fired low into the corner from the post.

It was his thirteenth goal in the Champions League this season and Villarreal became the 30th team Lewandowski has conceded in the competition, with only Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Karim Benzema and Raul scoring.

Then with Muller’s head upside down and with every missed chance for Bayern – amassing 45 shots over the legs – Villarreal became more confident in his ability to score in the first half.

With two minutes of normal time remaining, they did so in a medical way.

Dani Parejo showed his composure to start a move that was quickly and brilliantly worked out on the field for Moreno to pass Chukwueze’s cross to finish at the back post, just three minutes after he came on as a substitute.
