Since Portrait mode came out in 2016 with the iPhone 7 Plus, it has become one of the most used features of the camera app today. It’s not really surprising. Portrait mode allows you to take great DSLR-quality portrait style photos for your social media or professional portfolio. And you can even use the portrait mode for inanimate objects and even your pets.

Portrait mode is available on pretty much all of the best iPhones today, including the iPhone 13 Pro. While the original Photos app lets you edit portrait mode photos with basic tools, sometimes you just need an app that can add more Pizza to your photos. Here are the best apps for editing portrait mode photos on your iPhone and iPad.

I’ve been using Darkroom for several years now, and it’s one of my favorite photo editing apps in my huge arsenal. In fact, if I even edit my photos these days to go up on my Instagram, I’ll probably deal with them in the Darkroom first.

Darkroom is not only great for all your photo editing needs, but it also gives you complete control over your portrait mode photos. If you select an image in portrait mode in Darkroom, you can adjust the depth of field, then fine-tune the color settings (like brightness, contrast, etc.) for either the foreground, background, or both! However, Darkroom won’t have things like changing the look of bokeh in the background, but that’s the purpose of other apps. However, Darkroom is a good Swiss knife when it comes to all your photo editing needs, including selfies.

Darkroom lets you adjust DoF blur, along with color settings for both foreground and background, individually or together.

If you are looking to experiment with your portrait mode photos, Focos is a great app for that. For example, if you want to add shapes to your bokeh, Focos gets the job done.

With Focos, you can use it to take photos with a shallow depth of field, without having to manually paint or select what you want to blur. You can even get real 3D images with Focos, which is great. Focos’ specialty is the ability to simulate large apertures, which can result in bokeh effects that are usually only possible with DSLR cameras and lenses. This includes different shapes, such as hearts and circles, that can make your portrait photos pop. And if you are not satisfied with the photo, you can even refocus the photo after the fact. The picture is not bright enough? Focos can also add multiple lights in a 3D space, and much more.

For serious portrait mode editing, Focos is one of the best options out there.

Those who want to turn their Portrait style shots into something more cinematic will want to take a look at Anamorphic Cinematic Filters. This particular app uses anamorphic blur to create something exciting enough that looks like a movie.

Distorted Cinema Filters use the Metallic Engine to create realistic cinematic bokeh. Using AI, Anamorphic can automatically detect people in photos and apply anamorphic lens distortion in an optimized way to get the best possible picture. You can turn any photo into a Portrait style photo with anamorphic, and it comes with all the photo editing tools you could need. Best of all, Anamorphic is a one-time purchase, so there are no in-app purchases to deal with.

Another great app if you want the best Portrait style photos in just a few clicks is FabFocus. It makes use of advanced image recognition in order to make your photo editing life easier.

With FabFocus, it has automatic people detection, so it will use AI to blur the background. If there is already in-depth information, it works faster. You can even use FabFocus as a camera, which gives you more control over the native camera app. FabFocus’ editing tools allow you to independently adjust the amount of background blur, bokeh shape (such as hearts or stars), foreground and background brightness and saturation, and even improve what’s already in the foreground if you’re not satisfied with what’s already in focus.

While you can get some of these things done in the other apps we’ve already mentioned, FabFocus is a one-time purchase, so you don’t need a subscription to access these features.

You can even drop a video into Phocus, and it will turn it into a Portrait style video. And if you want to get more creative, Phocus has different styles that you can transfer to your Portrait style photos and videos, including the new Animation mode. Portrait mode has been one of my favorite features of the iPhone since it arrived a few years ago. I often take portrait style photos and selfies at Disneyland, and I love using them for pets too.
