Here’s how AirPods Pro 2 could foretell the launch of the new AirPods Max

Every now and then we’ve got rumors about the second-generation AirPods Pro, but note how little we know about AirPods Max 2. Aside from the new colors that came from this generation – and they’ve never been cut – there’s nothing else to say about the company’s premium headphones. Here’s why the AirPods Max 2 depends on Apple launching a better second generation AirPods Pro.

There are two main rumors about the AirPods Pro 2 which – if true – will show whether Apple is planning to release the second generation AirPods Max. The first is losing support. Here is what analyst Ming-Chi Kuo wrote in January:

We expect the Apple AirPods Pro 2 to launch in the 4Q22 with new selling points, including a new form factor design, support for the Apple Lossless Format (ALAC), and a charging case that can sound for users to track. We are optimistic about the demand for AirPods Pro 2 and estimate shipments will reach 18-20 million units in 2022.

This is interesting because the creator of AirPods addressed the limitations of Bluetooth in an interview in 2021. Gary Jeffs, Apple’s vice president of audio, said Apple really wanted a wireless standard that would allow for more bandwidth.

He says, “Wireless technology is obviously essential to deliver the content you’re talking about, but also things like the amount of response time you get when you move your head, and if that’s too long, between moving your head and the volume changing or staying still, will make you feel quite sick, So we have to focus very hard on getting the most out of Bluetooth and there are a number of tricks we can do to maximize or go beyond some of the limits of Bluetooth. But it’s fair to say we would like more bandwidth and… I’ll stop there limit. We would like more bandwidth,” he smiles.

The second major feature rumored about AirPods Pro 2 is a new health tracking function. A study by Apple showed how AirPods can be used to monitor breathing. Here is what we wrote about it:

In the research, Apple and Cornell researchers used a model-based technology to estimate a person’s respiratory rate using short sound clips obtained after physical exertion in healthy adults. Data were collected from 21 individuals using a microphone, and near-field headphones before, during and after strenuous exercise.

How does the second generation of AirPods Pro affect the potential AirPods Max 2?

While I don’t think Apple will introduce a new design for the AirPods Max 2 — or even a new smart case — I do believe that if the headset offers lossless support and new health-tracking features, it will be enough for the company to release a second version.

When Apple announced Lossless and Dolby Atmos support with Spatial Audio, there was serious controversy, because even with Apple’s exclusive 3.5mm Lightning audio cable, AirPods Max can’t stream lossless. If Apple could remedy that with a new chip or bandwidth format, that would be huge.

In addition, health tracking features will also be interesting. For example, an independent developer just launched an app that tells us if you’re fine with AirPods sensors.

former 9to5Mac Parker Ortolani and I have envisioned how Apple would take the new AirPods Max 2, as you can see here, but thinking about those two key features, I strongly believe that the existence of this headset depends on the AirPods Pro 2 that also has it.
