Samsung Android 12 update: These devices have One UI 4.0

Android 12 is still a very new version of the platform, but Samsung is releasing the update for its Galaxy devices less than a month after Google’s Pixel phones. More devices will be updated over the coming months, and Samsung has confirmed a preliminary list of devices to be updated.

This article will be constantly updated with new devices as the rollout begins.

What’s new in Android 12 on Samsung Galaxy devices?

Visually speaking, Android 12 is one of the biggest platform updates ever, but most of these design changes are entirely exclusive to Google Pixel devices. However, Samsung made some changes to the device in One UI 4.0.

Like Pixels, Android 12 forces Samsung devices to have all UI elements rounded corners, and adopts a new design language for some of these tools. Some stock apps from Samsung have been updated with a new design language as well, and the Dynamic Color feature in Android 12 works like a charm. The feature can pull colors from your wallpaper and apply them to system accents and many more applications.

There are also several privacy improvements in Android 12, with new indicators that clearly show when your microphone or camera is in use, even if they’re in the background. Users can choose to give apps only an approximate location instead of an exact location, and there’s a privacy dashboard in Settings to easily show apps using sensitive permissions.

Samsung devices confirmed to have Android 12

What devices will get Android 12? The list of Samsung Galaxy smartphones and tablets that will eventually get updated is quite long, and it generally includes every device released in the past two years, and the flagships going all the way back. So far, Samsung has confirmed the following devices to get updates for Android 12.

Newly added devices to the official Samsung list are marked in bold.

Galaxy S:

The list begins with Samsung’s Galaxy S21 series, which has already seen its update roll out to device owners in the United States, carriers, and in other regions around the world. Samsung will update the entire Galaxy S20 and Galaxy S10 lineups to Android 12 in the first two months of 2022.

Samsung opened the Galaxy S20 to the Android 12 beta update in November 2021, and hardware updates are scheduled for January and February of 2022. In December, the beta version expanded to Galaxy S10 devices.

Shortly after its introduction, Samsung resumed the widespread rollout of Android 12 on the Galaxy S21 series around Christmas, opening doors a few days later for the entire Galaxy S20 series as well as the older Galaxy S10 lineup. These devices weren’t expected to get Android 12 until early 2022, but US models including carrier variants didn’t see the update until January and February. Follow the Galaxy S10 5G just a few days later as it arrives in some parts of Europe with the Galaxy S10 Lite seeing an update in early January, more than a month ahead of schedule. The Galaxy S10 5G saw its Android 12 update roll out to the US and Korea around January 17th. The Galaxy S20 FE update arrived in the US in early January, along with a consistently broader launch of carrier variants for the rest of the S20 series. The Galaxy S10 series saw its Android 12 update in the US around January 19, and in Canada about a week later on January 28.

Galaxy Note:

Samsung’s Galaxy Note lineup, which seems to be disappearing forever, will only see 5 devices updated to Android 12. This includes Galaxy Note 20 devices as well as the Galaxy Note 10 series. The Galaxy Note 20 series has been in beta for some time, and in December 2021 Samsung has expanded its support for the Galaxy Note 10 series.

In late December, Samsung rolled out the Android 12 firmware for Galaxy Note 20 owners in some regions, with the update expanding to other regions in due course. As of January, the update has been rolling out widely including the major US carriers for both devices. The Galaxy Note 10 series also saw its update for the first time in December, more than a month earlier than the expected schedule. It took about a month for this update to reach the US, starting with the unlocked Galaxy Note 10+. The Galaxy Note 10 is following closely, including extending the update to Canada.

Galaxy Foldables:

Samsung’s foldable lineup is growing and the entire wallet is eligible for Android 12 and One UI 4.0 update. Samsung already has an active beta program for the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Flip 3 as of November, and the update is set to roll out before the end of the year. Samsung has also offered beta updates for the Galaxy Z Fold 2 and Z Flip series.

In December 2021, Samsung began rolling out stable updates to Android 12 for the Galaxy Z Flip 3 and Galaxy Z Fold 3 in certain regions, with their availability constantly expanding. Later in the month, Samsung began rolling out Android 12 on the Galaxy Z Flip and Flip 5G, as well as the Galaxy Z Fold 2. At first, these versions appear to be limited in parts of Europe. The original Galaxy Fold joined the party ahead of the new year, while only the Chinese Galaxy W22 picked up the Android 12 update on January 6. The original 5G version of the Galaxy Fold also started getting its update around January 11, while the Galaxy Z Flip and Galaxy Z Flip 5G saw Android 12 updates arriving in the US in late January. In mid-February, the Galaxy Z Fold 2 update arrived in the US starting with T-Mobile and Sprint. A day later, it expanded to Verizon.

The first two Galaxy A devices with Android 12 are the Galaxy A72 and Galaxy A52, both of which were updated during the first week of January in Russia. Around January 11, the Galaxy A52s saw its update in Korea. January 14 saw the Galaxy A42 5G roll out its update in Poland, and we also heard it hit devices at Verizon Wireless in the US.

Galaxy tab:

In the world of Android, tablets are not such a big issue, and it is very difficult to find a device with good support. Despite this, Samsung stands by most Android tablets, with Android 12 coming to 8 tablets over the next few months.

In late December 2021, much earlier than expected, Samsung began rolling out Android 12 to the Galaxy Tab S7 and S7+ in some regions. By January, the update had begun to expand to the US on select models. In March, the Galaxy Tab S6 series started to follow up with its update.

When will my Samsung device get Android 12?

Shortly after it began rolling out the Galaxy S21, Samsung also confirmed an official schedule to expect Android 12 updates on several other Galaxy smartphones.

The Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 are next, with Samsung planning to launch them in December this year. Notably, we’ve seen several beta updates for these devices since the software first opened, so it’s clear that Samsung is getting close to that launch.

The schedule, released via the Samsung Members app, sees most Samsung smartphones updated to Android 12 in January and February next year, with the previous generation Galaxy S20 series and Galaxy S10 series updating in those months. One interesting thing is that Samsung says that the standard Galaxy S20 won’t be updated until February, when the rest of the series will be released in January.

Also of note in this timeline is that Samsung is currently planning to roll out Android 12 for the next eight months, with some Galaxy A series devices not being updated until August next year. Of course, there is always a chance to speed things up if the development process goes well.

Keep in mind that these dates can vary by region, carrier, or various other factors. This list is also based on Samsung official US schedule, but other devices will get Android 12.
